I think the solution is to just look at their Republican odds and ignore the Democrats. JMDD at 3-1 (25%), sounds good to me!

I have made this point as well (though not as eloquently as you). The managers of this blog seem uninterested in providing such accuracy. Given some of their projections, I can’t say I’m surprised . . .

You are correct, they usually don’t add up exactly to 1 for purposes of profit for the bookies or the house or whatever you want to call it.

However, no one is placing monetary bets (to my knowledge) on these races. Let’s just take 1 example here, Senate District 34, since it is next to my comment window as I’m typing.

Jeannemarie: 3-1 odds
Chap: 4-1 odds

Ok, so written another way as a percent:
Jeannemarie: 25% chance of winning
Chap: 20% chance of winning.

25% + 20% = 45%. Is there a 55% chance that someone other than Jeannemarie or Chap will win? C’mon! The odds of Chap winning = (100% – odds of Jeannemarie winning).

It’s as simple as that. I’d say this race is a tossup, that means both candidates have odds of 1-1. FYI for the Oddsmaker here, even odds in a two way race is always 1-1 for both candidates. Two candidates with 3-1 (like in Senate District 29) is not accurate, unless there is a 3rd candidate out there.

Like I said, the odds in horseracing often don’t add to 1. Generally they add up to greater than 1. Here’s a link where you can read why that’s the case.
